Transcendence
The best things are beyond our comprehension – such things are transcendent.
The second best things are misunderstood, because these are the thoughts that we have of things that are transcendent.
The third best things are the things that which we talk about and our discussions and analysis of things transcendent.
Our word for those things that are transcendent is “God”.
What you thought you had, you did not have.
What you thought you knew, you did not know.
What you thought you did not have, was within you all the time.
He who says he knows, does not know.
He who says he does not know, knows.
Transcendence – the ultimate mystery.
So, in order for us to come to terms with those things in our lives that are impossible for us to deal with, we simply insert God, and allow our minds to be at rest. How else could we deal with the sudden death of an innocent child, a “miracle” cure of disease that confounds medical science, someone who “forsees” a disaster and sounds a warning, super heroic acts to save a total stranger…… the list goes on – the inexplicable depts of the human experience and psyche.
The most beautiful emotion we can experience is the mysterious. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead, a snuffed-out candle. To sense that behind anything that can be experienced there is something that our minds cannot grasp, whose beauty and sublimity reaches us only indirectly: this is religiousness. In this sense, and in this sense only, I am a very religious man.
